ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Why SOPA is dangerous
To Sum Up
SOPA:
  • Gives the government the right to unilaterally censor foreign websites.
  • Gives copyright holders the right to issue economic takedowns and bring lawsuits against website owners and operators, if those websites have features that make it possible to post infringing content. [A comment feature is enough.]
  • Makes it a felony offense to post a copyrighted song or video.

This bill turns us all into criminals. If it passes, then you either stop using the Internet, or you simply hope that you never end up in the crosshairs, because if you’re targeted, you will be destroyed by this bill. You don’t have to be a big, mean, nasty criminal — common Internet usage is effectively criminalized under this law. This bill will kill American innovation and development of the Internet, as it will become too risky to do anything of value. It is toxic and dangerous, and should not, under any circumstances, be supported.

This post is going to be a little weird, but that's because that's how I'm feeling right now.

My boyfriend proposed to me last night.

I'm still in shock, and I promised him an answer when he comes home three weeks from now. I have no idea what to answer.

On one hand I'm over the moon that he loves me so much, but on the other hand I'm terrified. I'm only 21 and I don't think I'm quite ready for my own family yet... I don't know what to do. I'm a little scared of telling him how I'm feeling, that he will take as a rejection of him and our relationship, but it's not. I Love Him! More that anything else in this world, but marriage?

Merry Jul!!!!

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Since I LOATHE eggnog, the answer will have to be Chocolate

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Wrapping FTW!

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White! The coloured ones makes my fingers itch to tear things down!

5. When do you put your decorations up? In the beginning of the month(first advent sunday)

6. What is your favorite holiday dish? Risengrød and blood-sasusage. Risengrød is a traditional Danish dish, and it's a sort of rice porridge, served with cinnamon sugar and a spoonful of butter. Sounds weird, but I love it!

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Baking all sorts of christmas cookies and the like with my family

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I never really believed in Santa, but when I was little I believed that we a a nisse(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomte) living in our attic, and he would be the one to bring me the presents that would be in my stocking every morning(it's a family tradition to leave a small present in the child's stocking every morning). I think I was around nine years old when I stopped believing in that he was comming with presents for me, but the magic of nisser have never really left my heart.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? In Denmark we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, so yes, all our presents are opened on Christmas Eve

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? With my mom in the morning of the 24th of December. We decorate it with glass ornaments, some of them back from when my Grandmother was a young girl

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Love Snow, hate the shovelling

12. Can you ice skate? ... shakily

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? I was about 3 years old and my uncle gave me this teddy bear. I called it Frøken Brun(Miss Brown), and this day today, almost 18 years late I still love that bear.

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you? Spending time with those I love.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Ris a la mande. Sound French, but the dish is 100% Danish!

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Decorating the tree with my mom, and baking.

17. What tops your tree? A star made of tiny pearls that my Great-Grandmother gave my mom, when my mom turned 16.

18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? Picking out the presents for those I love.

19. Candy Canes? Love Them!

20. Favorite Christmas show? ... Disney's Christmas Show

21. Saddest Christmas song? A Danish Christmas song called 'En rose så jeg skyde'(I saw a rose blossoming). It's not really a sad christmas song, it's very beautiful, but I sang it when my Gran was buried two years ago.

22. What is your favourite Christmas song? 'Der er noget i luften'(There is something in the air) another Danish Christmas song.

23. Favorite Christmas movie? Nightmare Before Christmas!

24. How long do you leave up Christmas decorations? Until after New Years Eve

25. What kind of cookies do you leave for Santa? ... I've never left cookies for Santa, But I've left Risengrød for our nisse!

Spread the word, even you're not a US citizen, it is important for everyone!! It easy to do and it can change everything. More info by clicking on the banner.

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Get on the phone and call your representative. Express your disapproval. Tell him or her exactly how you feel, and that you don't support this. Tell your friends to call their representatives, their Congressperson, and complain. Mention that you are a registered voter that takes your civic responsibility seriously and that you will use that vote to express your feelings about this.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

I couldn't agree more.

Dear everyone involved with the Archive of Our Own,

Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who's ever written a line of code, fixed a bug, wrangled a tag, answered a support ticket.

Thank you to the back-end coders and thank you to the front-end coders.

Thank you to everyone who's ever brainstormed about what the archive might do, and thank you to everyone who's poured their hearts, souls, and spare time into trying to make the archive do all of those things and more.

I use the AO3 every day. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for building it for me and for everyone who uses it -- and for everyone who doesn't use it yet but might use it someday.

This archive isn't something to which fandom is entitled. It's a labor of love. You make the archive as your gift to fandom, and I appreciate that gift so, so much.

Even though it isn't finished yet. Even though it isn't perfect yet. It's still awesome, and your hard work is tremendous and admirable, and I just want to say thanks.

(Dear everyone else: if anything in this post resonates with you, feel free to signal-boost or repost.)
